Ima was born in 1927. Ima's father was Iona Stephens (Friday) and her mother was Henry Friday. Her paternal grandparents were James Owens Stephens and Melissa Isabell Anna Acker (Stephens). She had a brother and four sisters, named Joel, Henrietta, Eunice, Mable and Iona. She was the youngest of the six children.
